Mainstream Life

Being one of our team will change your world

See opportunities

Mainstreamers are change-makers. Our vision of a world free of fossil fuels powers our purpose of making renewable energy, well… Mainstream.

That common purpose provides our inspiration, and the knowledge that our work is the best chance to avert a climate emergency is a source of huge pride. Making a real difference also requires a culture that supports our rapid growth – one that puts people first.

Our values define us

Wherever we are in the world, whatever we do in the company, we all share the same values that guide us in the way we work and how we deliver.

We innovate and are entrepreneurial in overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities. We operate with integrity, engage with respect, and build-in sustainability. We work as a team and, most importantly, we work safely.

These values are not logos on a wall; we champion them, we celebrate them, we live them. They stand up to the size of our ambition. And they can stand up to yours, too.

“We can find sustainable solutions that can benefit people, the planet and the industry if we identify them early enough to consider them before project designs are closed.”

Amisha Patel

Global Head of Public Affairs and Policy

“You’re seeing pressure on emerging economies to step up [to renewables], but these communities are feeling the brunt of rising energy costs and impacts of climate change. How we’re going to ensure they have access to clean energy technologies, how we’re going to bring them skills and opportunities – I think we have a real responsibility as a global industry in sharing the benefits of an energy transition equitably.”

“Momentum behind renewable energy is gaining pace… it all adds urgency to improving the workforce diversity that’s needed to drive a truly global energy transition, and this is something Mainstream is working on in all fields, including finance.”

General Manager, Mainstream Asset Management South Africa

“Independent Power Producers compete but, in terms of the just transition in South Africa, it’s important we do things together. We need say how, as an industry, we have changed the social economic development landscape. That, for me, is important because if we don’t tell our collective story, then we’re going to get the opposition of ‘renewable energy wants to take the jobs of coal miners’, and yet we can positively impact their jobs as well.”

“We talk about visibility of [project] pipeline and this is exactly what the supply chain needs, and hopefully this handbook will give them the ammunition to build to their teams, build their knowledge and reach out to their colleagues in Europe to realise the lessons learnt and get them to realise these projects quicker, smarter and more efficiently.”

Why are women joining Mainstream?

Our Vision, Mission and Values

Mainstream by the numbers

Work sustainably, with time for life

Life in a fast-paced company brings its own challenges, and sustaining our performance starts with looking out for your work/life balance.

Our calendar of YouFirst conversations and our Employee Assistance Programmes provide the safe spaces to ask a manager for help, or get the support of an external counsellor.

And our wellbeing programme has featured sessions about disconnecting from the virtual office, the right diet, and personal strategies to keep your head in a good place and energy levels high.

As a Mainstreamer, your health is the company’s highest priority. It’s how we live our first value of safety.

Our people’s take

Every year we ask colleagues for their career perspectives of Mainstream. This is some of the feedback that helped secure our latest certification as a Great Place to Work®…

94%

  • say “When I look at what we accomplish, I feel a sense of pride.”

89%

  • say “My work has special meaning, this is not ‘just a job’.”

92%

  • say “I can be myself around here.”

Energise your career here

Planning your progression

Regular ‘Your Career’ conversations with your manager map out your development pathway, with appropriate training and mentoring.

‘I can fulfil my aspirations here’

That’s what 85% of our colleagues said in the 2021 GPtW survey, with 88% agreeing they are “developing professionally”, too.

Our training gets you further

We develop our next leaders from within, for the sustainability of our culture, expertise and ambition for growth. And this talent planning starts and finishes with training.

From the moment you become a Mainstreamer, you will be constantly learning. Firstly, what we do and how we do it, and then all the deep dives you need – conferences, lunch and learns, in-house academies and journals  –  to stay on top of the latest industry trends and technologies.

There will also be opportunities for paid-for course learning, with every colleague being encouraged to use their annual entitlement to upskill, be it in project management or rough-terrain driving.

Taken together, we received, on average almost a week – 38 hours – of training during 2021.
