Onshore wind

Our growing onshore wind pipeline is bringing this clean, affordable energy to millions of people around the world.

From the earliest days of Mainstream, onshore wind has been at the heart of our pioneering role as a developer, builder and operator of renewable energy.

We have developed gigawatts of new generation capacity across four continents – and have helped decarbonise the footprints of our partners in the worlds of energy, private equity and retail manufacturing.

Onshore wind is one of the cheapest and quickest to deploy, forms of electricity generation in the world today.

Now we are applying our expertise in this technology in new markets and new local partnerships, gathering even more wind behind the global energy transition.

Wind projects that offer change for the better

Wherever you find onshore wind farms developed by Mainstream, they will all have something in common. They sit comfortably in their setting because we aim to limit their impact on the environment and respect the heritage and traditions of local communities.

Here are six more ways in which our values-led approach sets our projects apart…

A world of experience

We have built onshore wind projects in Chile, the USA, Canada, Ireland and South Africa.

Collaborative approach

Working with local partners, like AboitizPower for our 90 MW Libmanan JV brings together the best of global and local.

Safety first

During five million contractor hours on our Chilean construction sites in 2021, there were just 15 ‘Lost Time Incidents’.

Community focused

In 2021 we invested €3.5million in community projects to improve health, education, cultural and enterprise opportunities.

Local content, local jobs

Some 48% of the Perdekraal East Wind Farm is ‘made in South Africa’, and most of its construction workforce was local.

Speed of delivery

Our 157 MW Tchamma Wind Farm in Chile was energised just 13 months after the laying of its first wind turbine foundation.

Our Global Development Standard

Standards you can bank on

Here’s an illustration of why Mainstream projects are considered best-in-class, to the tune of more than €3 billion in project financing to date. At every stage of their lifecycle, progression depends on key deliverables, or “gates” – a process of de-risking that makes them inherently bankable.

It’s a process we refer to as our Global Development Standard, a unique repository of in-house experience and continuous learning that enables us to deliver, operate and eventually decommission projects to the same optimal level of quality across all our markets.

Protecting Biodiversity

5,000 hectare Oranjefontein Protected Area was incorporated within the Greater Goegap Nature Reserve, famed for its rugged landscape, rare vegetation and rich biodiversity, through funding by Mainstream’s neighbouring Kangnas Wind Farm.
