About us
Mainstream Renewable Power is a leading pure-play renewable energy company, with wind and solar assets across key markets South Africa and Chile.
We are one of the most successful developers of gigawatt-scale renewables platforms across onshore wind and solar power generation. The company has successfully delivered 6.6 GW of wind and solar generation assets to financial close-ready and has a net global pipeline of 13 GW.
In 2021, Aker Horizons acquired a majority stake in Mainstream, and in 2022, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. joined Aker Horizons as a long-term strategic investor. In September 2025, Aker Horizons’ ownership stake in Mainstream was transferred to Aker Capital AS, a subsidiary of Aker ASA, as part of a group restructuring.
We have raised more than EUR 3.0 billion in project finance to date, and we have 150+ colleagues across three continents.
A global mission
We are establishing renewables as the climate and energy security solution; clearing pathways for their deployment by engagement with policymakers; developing supply chains through industry partnerships; and collaborating with communities to ensure that nobody is left behind.
The world is undergoing a once-off transition from its reliance on fossil fuels to investing and building the infrastructure for a future that is powered by renewable energy.
Our mission is to drive this transition.
What we do
Providing renewable energy solutions. That’s energy for countries, communities and corporations. Energy that can be transported to where it’s needed, that can be stored and that can even be converted into new forms of energy. Energy that is affordable, reliable and, most of all, clean. This is what we do: delivering energy solutions that accelerate the global energy transition.
Onshore Wind
- An onshore wind pioneer, we have built some of the very first onshore wind farms across our markets.
Solar PV
- Reliable, low-cost and quick to deploy, we have delivered some of the first utility-scale solar PV farms in our markets.
Hybridisation & Storage
- We’re proving renewables can deliver ‘firm power’, by combining solar, wind and battery technologies in hybrid platforms.
Power Purchase Agreements
- It’s not just governments seeking clean, affordable, reliable energy. We’re tailoring Power Purchase Agreements to private sector customers too.
How we do it?
A sustainable approach that sets us apart.
We have the energy solutions. What marks us out as a trusted partner is how we deliver them, with sustainability, quality and integrity at their core.
Our Global Development Standard – the in-house standard to which we develop, construct and operate – is aligned with the highest international standards. Good governance provides the quality mark of sustainability for our markets, investors, colleagues, communities as well as the environment. And our drive for digitalisation is transforming our industry-leading reputation for innovation.
Our Global Development Standard
No matter where in the world, when you see a Mainstream project, you know it has been delivered to our unique Global Development Standard.
Our in-house Global Development Standard is the result of decades of experience all across the world. It is our comprehensive and continually improving process that ensures all our projects are delivered to the same high quality, even when local regulations don’t require it.

Reduced operating costs
AI-driven inspections and monitoring of critical systems to anticipate faults before they occur.
Preserving natural habitats
Drones, cameras, and monitoring software all play a part in continuous environmental monitoring helping to preserve natural habitats across vast areas.
Lowering Grid Volatility
Using historic data to optimally dispatch energy to lower grid volatility.
Optimal energy production
Optimised wind turbine generator layout to achieve optimal annual energy production.
Intelligent Wildlife Monitoring and Preservation
Driven by stage 5 of our Global Development Standard, all Mainstream projects undertake a comprehensive assessment of the needs of the local environment in order to protect biodiversity and support wildlife preservation.
With our partners, we have developed an optical AI system that uses a collection of cameras in and around project sites to automatically track and identify wildlife. Through a system of machine learning, our teams can learn about the behaviours and variety of species in our project areas.
Thanks to this innovation, Mainstream can drive research that benefits the wider industry while also delivering a cost-effective way to manage turbine shutdowns during migrations and protect biodiversity throughout the lifecycle of our wind farms.
Governance
Doing the right thing, the right way!
Our position as a leader in the clean energy revolution has been built upon sound governance through strong principles and ethical practices.
Our track record
Our journey began in 2008, and we’ve been laying down new milestones ever since. Auction wins, capital financing deals, pivotal partnerships, delivering plants into commercial operation, new markets and billion-euro investments. These notable achievements are transforming a renewable energy pioneer into an energy major.
Our Vision
To electrify the world with renewable energy.
With the realities of climate change and concerns for energy security driving world leaders to look to as the solution, our vision has rapidly become much more of a reality.
The world has sufficient wind and solar resource to power our entire planet many times over. With technologies advancing rapidly, every country now has the potential to power their own energy future sustainability and cost-effectively.
Join us on our journey at the forefront of this change.
A solid foundation for growth
Mainstream was founded on the principles of our shared vision, mission and values. These are the fundamental building blocks of our business which we have worked hard to incorporate into every facet of our business, day in, day out.
As we continue to expand our footprint in our core markets, our vision, mission and values will continue be the solid foundation that unites us as one team, together on a global mission.
Our Values
Working Together
We believe that working together is what makes the difference to our success. Our relationships are based in inclusion, trust and respect which enable effective collaboration with each other, and the communities in which we work. Our enthusiasm for our purpose mean that we celebrate all successes; big and small.
Integrity
Our integrity matters most; we see it in the small and large decisions we make about how we do business ethically, how we make Mainstream a physically and psychologically safe place to work, and how we integrate all our stakeholders into our processes so that we can leave the planet a better place for future generations.
Excellence
We strive for excellence through every step of the value chain, where everyone has accountability for their part in our strategy. We remain resilient in our focus on solutions in line with our mission.
Boldness
Our boldness means we have the courage to innovate and be agile in a growing and changing industry. We have a clear vision and encourage entrepreneurial mindsets so that we continue to impact the negative effects of CO2 across the globe.
One Team, One Mission
What makes Mainstream truly special is our people. Our colleagues have developed some of the world’s first and largest renewable energy projects. When wind and solar power were alternative and emerging technologies, our people were pioneering the way forward and we now have the benefit of that knowledge for our teams around the world.

Sustainability
Wind and solar energy. That’s renewable. But for them to power a global energy transition, we’re making sure their delivery is sustainable too.
In helping the world to meet all its energy needs sustainably, we are leading by example – by putting sustainability at the centre of everything we do.
That means minimising the impact of our projects and supply chains on the environment, maximising the social wins of a green economy in our communities, and leveraging good governance in our workplace to seize opportunities in the marketplace.
Living up to our environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) responsibilities is not a ‘nice to have’ badge of business honour – it’s a ‘must-do’ to drive a fair, inclusive energy transition and limit global warming to 1.5oC.
Our Community
In our mission to drive the global energy transition to renewable energy, we are committed to leaving nobody behind.
What we do to become a trusted partner
Earning the trust of our communities is fundamental to our success. We earn it through a partnership approach that’s driven by our core value of respect and benchmarked against the highest international standards.
Early and open collaboration with local people helps to inform project designs; it also secures buy-in for the longer-term benefits of sustainability. The close engagement is ongoing, and the initiatives that we support are often focused on needs identified by communities themselves.
How We Invest
Education
Funding of school refurbishments, classroom technology, student supports, STEM programmes, teaching positions and third-level bursaries are opening up new life possibilities.
Health
Improving healthcare outcomes in partnership with local authorities and NGOs by upgrading medical facilities and helping the most vulnerable access services.
