In December 2017, Khobab Wind Farm (137 MW) and sister project, Loeriesfontein 2 Wind Farm (138 MW) commenced a 20-year commercial operation as part of Bid Window 3 of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

Khobab Wind farm, consisting of 61 turbines (2.3 MW) was delivered into operation on schedule, on budget and without a single lost-time incident.

Khobab Wind Farm has a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with Eskom and is operated by Mainstream Asset Management South Africa.

Powering 170,000 South African homes each year

Situated in the Northern Cape, 60 km north of Loeriesfontein, Khobab Wind Farm was chosen for its excellent wind resource, proximity to national roads for transportation, access to the grid and local stakeholder and municipality support.

When operating at full capacity the Khobab Wind Farm will power up to 170,000 South African homes each year and eliminate approximately 550,000 tonnes of CO2 when compared to fossil fuel power plants.

During the operations phase of Khobab Wind Farm, a monetary commitment has been made to specifically developing enterprises and improving the socio-economic welfare of the community for the lifetime of the wind farm.
