Norway
Mainstream builds on the long industrial and offshore heritage of the Aker group’s home market in Norway.
The Norwegian government has set an ambitious target for offshore wind of 30 GW by 2040. The two areas, Utsira Nord and Sørlige Nordsjø II, are in the upcoming licensing round with a total capacity of 4.5 GW. The next licensing round will be allocated by 2025.
Since 1841, the Aker group has played a major role in the industrial development of Norway and the global offshore sector. Aker has played a key role in past energy transitions and has intentions to drive the next one – in offshore wind. As part of the Aker group, Mainstream has clear ambitions to develop considerable volumes of offshore wind in Norway.

Building offshore wind competence in the supply chain
Building healthy local supply chains is key to our industrial strategy. Mainstream has taken a lead in inspiring the Norwegian offshore and maritime supply chains to target offshore wind.
We have embarked on supplier roadshows in 11 cities from the far north to the southern tip of Norway and met with hundreds of suppliers across the array of services.
We have brought Exfin, Norway’s export agency, and Achilles International, the supplier database and qualification system, to all our roadshows to show suppliers the available support in targeting the offshore wind industry.
We have also supported the establishment and roll-out of the Norwegian government’s innovation and development agency’s program to build the offshore wind competence of Norwegian suppliers: Innovation Norway’s Entry Programme – Offshore Wind
Developing new offshore wind knowledge
We have engaged a variety of stakeholders to identify topics and knowledge gaps in offshore wind. The result is our participation in numerous research projects where we partner with universities, NGOs, industry and government bodies.
For example, FME NorthWind – Norwegian Research Centre on Wind Energy looks cross-functionally at innovation to reduce costs and risks, as well as create jobs and export potential.
On the environmental and sustainability front, our involvement in the MARCIS and VisAVis projects both target improved understanding of birds. The WindSys project focuses on better understanding of impacts from noise on fish.
We are continuously working to minimize the environmental impacts of our projects and encourage you to reach out should you know about relevant research that we should consider, either as partners or as reference groups.
