Offshore Civil Engineer - London, UK
SMart Wind requires a senior ‘Offshore Civil Engineer’ to manage the delivery of civil engineering services and the design of a construction and operations and maintenance strategy appropriate for the timely development of its Round 3 zone. This is a key position within the team that has the wider remit of delivering a cost reduction strategy across civil engineering, construction, geotechnical investigation and operation and maintenance on eight 500MW projects over a ten year period.
The Offshore Engineer will be responsible for managing a number of contracted companies in order to ensure the civil engineering and construction and operations and maintenance strategy scope is completed on time, on budget and to the highest quality. They will therefore be responsible for one of the largest elements of the development budget.
They will be supported in their role by an Engineering Team in order to ensure contracted companies have access to the information they require to conduct their work appropriately and to manage internal and external working groups to maximise communication between partners and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities and Activities
General responsibilities:
- Understand, promote and adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations and policies in undertaking all activities and ensure safe design of offshore wind farms
- To adhere to the company values of SMart Wind at all times and represent the company in a professional and respectful manner
Project level responsibilities:
- Ensure all The Crown Estate contractual milestones are met in relation to civil engineering
- Manage the civil engineering development budget
- Agree scopes of work for civil engineering work (e.g. geotechnical surveys), manage tender or appointment process and manage day-to-day activity as required.
- To work with civil engineering contractors to deliver the agreed civil engineering scope of work on each project on time, on budget and to the highest quality
- Provide interpretation of survey results and summary information to SMartwind colleagues and management.
- Manage met mast design, procurement and installation
- Manage an independent engineer on civil engineering issues and associated activities
- Manage conceptual, preliminary and detail design of foundation components.
- Review design process and output for accuracy and consistency. To use the outcomes emerging from the project development and civil engineering work to create a safe, timely and cost effective construction strategy for each individual project
- To design and manage the budget necessary for the delivery of the civil engineering and construction strategy work packages
- To work with suitable vessel operators in order to maximise efficiencies in vessel design and ensure timely delivery for the SMart Wind construction strategy
- Ensure contracted companies have access to the information they require to conduct their work appropriately (including geotechnical survey information, environmental survey information, wind turbine loads etc.)
- Work with all relevant strategic partners to ensure a co-ordinated and efficient approach to civil engineering and construction planning across partners
- Provide regular input and support to the SMart Wind environment, consents and grid conenction teams as and when required
- To work with the Offshore Delivery Manager in order to provide regular input to the shareholder procurement teams
- Involvement in risk analysis and assessment in relation to all development and construction activities
- Regular reporting to the General Manager
- Zone level responsibilities:
- Lead a civil engineering and construction strategy groups to design and deliver a safe, timely and cost effective construction and operation strategy across the Hornsea zone
- To work with the Offshore Delivery Manager to create and manage a cost reduction strategy across all key components and major contracts required to develop, construct and operate the Hornsea Zone
- Regular reporting to the General Manager
Key Skills, Competencies and Capabilities
- The candidate should be equipped with the following key skills and capabilities:
- Civil Engineer or equivalent with experience of marine structures.
- Experience in carrying out geotechnical survey work or in designing structures for offshore marine environments is advantageous.
- Knowledge of formal Project Management techniques
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Ability to work in a team, coordinate and enthuse colleagues and consultants
- Strong initiative and the ability to proactively identify required tasks
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to maintain sight of the ‘big picture’ and overarching objectives at all times
- Good IT skills, including experience with MS Word, Excel and Project packages and GIS capability, experience with Primavera and CAD are advantageous
- An organised approach to working, task prioritisation and time management
- Fluency in English (written and oral), working knowledge of German and Danish an advantage
