The UK has set ambitious renewable energy targets and offshore wind will make a large contribution towards achieving them. The UK government is currently overhauling the regulatory environment to ensure offshore wind’s success and the Infrastructure Planning Commission is being reformed to handle the complexities of consenting large offshore wind farms.
Also, the process for accessing the transmission system has recently been reformed to ensure offshore wind farms can connect to the grid in time to meet the 2020 targets. Finally, the financial support scheme is being refined to attract additional sources of capital to the offshore sector. All of these steps are significant measures on their own but together will ensure the UK’s offshore wind ambitions become a reality.
